Any sea arm, river, canal, stream represents for the protista who live there an entire universe of microcosms, interconnected but distinct from each other; in other words, what we tend to consider an environment, for example the bottom of a channel, results for protista as distinct in a myriad of different microhabitats, each, distinguishable by the different combination of multiple parameters more or less similar to each other.
