Water can be both a resource for peace and a source of conflict. Consider the tensions that arise when water resources are scarce, or the disputes between countries bordered by waterways that mark international territorial boundaries. That's why the United Nations has chosen 'Water for Peace' as the theme for the 2024 edition of World Water Day. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1992 following the Rio Conference, World Water Day is celebrated annually on 22 March to highlight the importance of this vital resource.

Factors such as the effects of climate change and population growth underline the urgent need to unite the world's population in protecting and conserving water. It's also important to remember that public health, food, energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all depend on the proper management of the water cycle. For these reasons, it is imperative to recognise that water is not just a resource to be exploited, but a fundamental human right that is inextricably linked to every facet of life.

Therefore, as emphasised by the UN, the aim of this year's World Water Day is to create a positive ripple effect, rallying the world's population around water and using it as a catalyst for building a more stable and peaceful future.
