Planting 3 million trees within the territory of the metropolitan city of Milan by 2030 – multiplying the number of trees along streets, squares and in courtyards, on the roofs and façades of our houses: this is the main and ambitious objective of Forestami, an urban forestation project based on research by the Politecnico that has been brought about with the cooperation of various bodies, from the Municipality and Metropolitan City of Milan, to Parco Nord and Parco Agricolo Sud.
The work began in November 2019, after the launch of the project at the World Forum on Urban Forest – Milano Calling, and continued until March 2020, planting 76,577 trees of the 101,446 planned. Of the plantings suspended due to the pandemic, 19,778 will be resumed in November, with the start of the new tree-planting season. In addition, 253 new areas have been identified, in 24 municipalities (from Abbiategrasso to Rho, from Melegnano to Corsico) and in five regional and supra-municipal parks, to be assigned for bedding out.
Planting trees is one of the most effective and economical ways to slow down global warming, reduce energy consumption, clean fine dust from the air we breathe and improve the well-being of citizens.
